“You actually think you’re going to find true love on free

“You actually think you’re going to find true love on free dating sites? Come on, man! How gullible are you?” Jeremy was used to getting harassed by his buddies over women. Since he was pretty much the only guy in their favourite bar that didn’t hit on everything in a skirt, he was usually the butt of a lot of jokes. Once, he had made the mistake of mentioning free dating sites in conversation and they had never let him live it down. Truth be told, Jeremy couldn’t care less.

What none of his friends knew was that Jeremy had actually met someone. Amanda was a really great woman but she didn’t live in their immediate area. In fact, it would be about a three-hour drive if Jeremy decided to go and meet her in person. They hadn’t really reached the point of considering a meeting but it was something Jeremy thought about often. Only recently had Amanda consented to taking their relationship out of text and into voice. She had given Jeremy her phone number after weeks of him hinting and prodding and finally flat out asking for it. Laughingly, Amanda had told him she wondered when he’d gather up the nerve to ask her appropriately.

Their first phone call had been amazing. Amanda had been really nervous, her voice barely a whisper as she answered his call. However, nerves quickly abated and that first call lasted all night. “It’s the first time I ever watched the sun come up,” Jeremy told her truthfully, “and, even still, I don’t think I want this conversation to end.” Real life made the decision for them, though, because Amanda had to hang up and get ready for work. Jeremy apologized that she was going to be tired all day and his heart soared when all she said was, “It will be the best kind of tired I’ve ever been, Jeremy.”

Several more calls had followed and Jeremy had stopped visiting the free dating sites all together. He had fallen hard for Amanda and she was all that he wanted. More and more, he was thinking about meeting her, being able to hold her, to kiss her for the first time - it consumed his thoughts. So, when his buddies went on about the “uselessness” of free dating sites, Jeremy just let them talk. So, he had found the very thing he had hoped for in a somewhat unconventional way. The day he could walk into the bar with Amanda by his side, maybe then they would understand.
